Mymensingh

Mymensingh is a district of Bangladesh and it is located in Dhaka Division in northern Bangladesh. Mymensingh city is the headquarters of this district. The city is located about 120 km north of Dhaka which is the capital of the country. This district is bounded by Netrokona and Kishorganj to the east, Sherpur, Jamalpur and Tangail to the west, Gazipur district to the south and Meghalaya state of India and Garo Hills to the north. Generally the city is known for famous educational institutions such as Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh
Medical College, Mymensingh Ananda Mohon University College, Mymensingh Engineering College, Mymensingh Poly technique Institute, Mymensingh Muminunnesa Women College, Mymensingh Girls' Cadet College etc. This district has also very good transportation system.

Mymensingh is a district of British East India Company. In 1787, this district was established but later it was reorganized into six districts (Mymensingh, Kishorganj, Tangail, Netrokona, Jamalpur and Sherpur). Earlier this Mymensingh town known as Nasirabad but later it is placed on the west bank of Brahmaputra River. The administrative headquarters are at Nasirabad. Being more than 220 years old, Mymensingh has a rich cultural and political history. The Vidyamoyee Uccha Balika Bidyalaya and Muminunnesa Women's College have played a great role in educating Bengali Muslim women. A majority of first-generation successful Bangladeshi women have attended these schools and colleges, including the first woman justice of the High Court of Bangladesh, Justice Nazmun Ara Sultana. The district is for the most part level and open, covered with well-cultivated fields, and intersected by numerous rivers. Mymensingh consists with 12 Upazillas (Mymensingh Sadar, Gaffargoan, Haluaghat, Gauripur, Bhaluka, Ishwarganj, Muktagachha, Dhobaura, Trishal, Fulbaria, Phulpur, and Nandail) and 8 municipalities (Mymensingh Sadar, Muktagachha, Trishal, Bhaluka, Ishwarganj, Gaffargoan, Nandail and Gauripur).

Mymensingh has a total population of 227,246 where, male 54.22% and female 45.78% (Muslims 89%, Hindus 10% and other religion 01%). Here the average literacy rate is 58% (male 56% and female 44%). In this region the main occupations of the people are agriculture 28%, agricultural farm-hands 24.43%, wage laborer 2.67%, transport 4.21%, weavers 2.35%, commerce 22.39%, service 7.41% and others 8.54%.Paddy, jute, pulse, peanut, coriander, karalla, sweet potato, ginger, chili, cauliflower, oilseed, turmeric, wheat, and onion are the main crops in this region and main fruits are mango, jack fruit, black berry, coconut, betel nut, palm, papaya, banana and guava.

Economical environment in the Mymensingh is normal. This district was known for jute production which was termed 'golden fiber' being a highly remunerative cash crop of the country. Due to the high demand for polythene bags and lower use of jute based products, and also other economical reasons, the jute industry has been significantly depressed. The rural economy of Mymensingh is agriculture. Agriculture is the most important sector contributing to GDP, followed by growing service sector. Now a day’s many people are interested about poultry firming and fisheries. Beside this many industries and mills are growing day by day due to good transportation system.

Mymensingh has an excellent transport system with links to all the districts of Bangladesh. The main transport system in the city is train, buses, mini buses, cars and rickshaws. Mymensingh is well connected by highways, waterways and railways links to Bangladesh and capital city Dhaka, as well as other parts of Rajshahi, Khulna, Rangpur, Chittagong, Barisal, Sylhet and the whole country. The distance from Dhaka to Mymensingh is about 120 km north from the Mohakhali bus stop. Nowadays, the journey by bus is very comfortable because of some good quality bus services. Government owned Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTC) provides bus services to Mymensingh and other cities. Besides this, many different companies bus are also available in this district. Passengers can get off anywhere after paying the full fare. Launches and trawlers are also available in the waterways.

Mymensingh has very huge educational facility. There are 1 Agricultural University, 2 Medical College, 1 Polytechnic Institute, 1 Homeo Medical College, 1 Vocational Institute, 1 Veterinary training Institute, 2 Teacher's Training Institute, 1 Primary Teacher's Training Institute, 1 National Institute of Primary Education, 5 Government College, 58 Non-Government College, 9 Government High School, 374 Non-Government high school, 133 Secondary School, 1216 Madrassa, 1249 Government Primary School, 803 Non-Government Primary School, 37 Kindergarten, 1065 NGO operated school and 1 Art School. Notable educational institutions are: Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh Medical College, Mymensingh Engineering College, Jatiya Kabi Kazi Nazrul Islam University, Muminunnesa Women's College, Teachers Training College, Mymensingh Mohila College, Mymensingh Polytechnic Institute (MPI), Shahid Syed Nazrul Islam College, Ananda Mohan College, Nasirabad College, Women Teachers Training College, Mymensingh Islami Academi & College, College of Business Science & Technology (CBST), Mymensingh Zilla School, Vidyamoyee Uccha Balika Bidyalaya, Govt. Besides this, Mymensingh has 8 Educational Research Center, namely; National Academy for Primary Teachers' Education (NAPE), Swadu Pani Matsya Gobeshona Kendro, Veterinary Training Institute, The Institute of Radiation Genetics and Plant Breeding, Primary Training Institute, Women Teachers' Training College, BINA and Teachers' Training College.

Mymensingh has also some tourist attraction for both its natural and historical beauty. The main tourist attractions are: Alexandar Castle (locally known as "Lohar Kutir"), Soshi Lodge or Mymensingh Palace, Bipin Park, Mymensingh Museum, Zainul Abedin Art Gallery or Museum, Monument of the Liberation War of Bangladesh, Inauguration board in Shambuganga bridge, Shambuganga bridge and the Brahmaputra river. In 1903 King Edward VII visited this region. The great poet Rabindranath Tagore and The national poet of Bangladesh Kazi Nazrul Islam also visited this area. Besides this, Mahatma Gandhi, Sir Samuel Baker, Subhas Chandra Bose, Grand Duke Boris of Russia along with General Sir George White and Shyama Presad Mukherjee visited here.

Mymensingh produces many notable persons in the Bangladesh’s history. Some of the notable persons are Sir Jagadish Chandra Bose, Shilpacharya Zainul Abedin, Upendra Kishore Roy Chowdhury, Sukumar Roy, Shirshendu Mukhopadhyay, Leela Majumder, Maharaja Surya Kanta Acharyya, Maharaja Soshi Kanta Acharya, Maharajkumar Sitangshu Kanta Acharya, Maharajkumar Snehangshu Kanta Acharya, Maharaja Brojendra Kishore Roy Chaudhuri, Taslima Nasreen, Dr. Sudhangsu Mohan Bhowmick of Lytton Medical School and his late wife Ina etc.
