Comilla

Comilla is a district of Bangladesh. It is located about 100 kilometers south east of Dhaka. It established as a district of Bengal (present Bangladesh) by the British in 1790 and it included the Sub-divisions of Brahmanbaria and Chandpur which eventually became separate districts in 1984. Its city in south-eastern Bangladesh and located along the Dhaka-Chittagong Highway. The city is the administrative center of the Comilla District and it is a part of the Chittagong Division.Comilla has a total area of 3086.13 square kilometers. The district is bordered by
Brahmanbaria and Narayanganj districts to the north, Laksham, Noakhali, Chauddagram and Feni districts to the south, Tripura of India to the east, and Barura, Munshiganj and Chandpur districts to the west. The major rivers of the Comilla are Gumati and little Feni. The city has a total area of 12.09 square kilometers and it consists of 18 mouzas and 3 wards. Comilla Thana was officially converted into an upazilla in 1983 which contains one municipality 18 wards, 19 union parishads, 452 mouzas and 458 villages.

In 1732 Comilla became the center of the Bengal-backed domain of Jagat Manikya. Before 1732, the Comilla region was once under ancient Samatat and was joined with Tripura State. After that this district came under the reign of the kings of the Harikela in the ninth century AD. During eighth century AD, tenth and mid eleventh century AD, Lalmai Mainamati was ruled by Deva dynasty. In 1764, the small farmer Movement against the king of Tripura, which originally formed under the leadership of Shamsher Gazi, is a notable historical event in Comilla. In 1765, it came under the rule of East India Company. This district was established as Tripura district in 1790. It was renamed Comilla in 1960. In 1984, Chandpur and Brahmanbaria subdivisions of this district were transformed into districts.

In 1905, communal tension spread over Comilla when a Muslim was shot in the town during the partition of Bengal. Kazi Nazrul Islam composed patriotic songs and tried to awaken the town people by protesting the Prince of Wales's visit to India, on 21 November 1921. Avay Ashram, as a revolutionary institution, played a significant role during this time. Poet Rabindranath Tagore and Mahatma Gandhi visited Comilla at that time. In 1931, approximately 4000 small farmers in Mohini village in Chauddagram Upazilla revolted against a land revenue tax. The British Gurkha soldiers fired indiscriminately on the crowd, killing four people. In 1932, in a major small farmers gathering, the police fired at Hasnabad of Laksham Upazilla. Two people were killed and many were wounded. Comilla Cantonment is one of most important military bases and it is the oldest in East Bengal. During the World War II, it was widely used by the British Indian Army. There is a war cemetery in Comilla that was established after the World War II to remember the Allied soldiers who died during World War I and II, mostly from Commonwealth states and the United States. There are a number of Japanese soldiers were buried there as well.

Comilla is located 97 kilometers from the capital city (Dhaka). So, Comilla has a very good transportation system. It is well connected by highways and railways links to Chittagong and Dhaka, as well as other parts of Sylhet and the whole country. Comilla is a hub of road communication of eastern part of Bangladesh. One of the oldest highways of the Indian Sub-continent, (“The Grand Trunk Road”) passes through the city. At present, the most important Dhaka-Chittagong highway bypasses the city from the cantonment to Poduar Bazaar. The main transport system in the city is buses, mini buses, cars and rickshaws.

The economy of Comilla has been flourished through trade and cottage industries, especially the 'Khadi' textile. But the economy is mainly based on agriculture. The “Bangladesh Export Promotion Zone Authority” has established the “Comilla Export Processing Zone” spread over an area of 104.44 hectares (258 Acres) in the Comilla old Airport Area for the economic development of this region. Main occupations in this region are Agriculture 42.78%, commerce 12.6%, service 10.78%, transport 3.21%, agricultural laborer 14.96%, wage laborer 2.46%, construction 1.28%, and others 11.93%. Many people are also working outside of the Bangladesh. Most of the peoples are Muslims (89%) and other religious groups include Hindus (9%), Buddhists and Christians (02%).

In the second half of the eighteenth century East India Company established a large cotton mill at Charpata (south of the district). Cotton cloths were exported to other districts in those days. At present Comilla “Khaddar” is famous in the country. Comilla is noted for potteries of Bijoypur. Other cottage industries include bamboo and cane works, Shital Pati, hokka, and madur (mat) made of murta tree. Comilla has many bazaars and markets include Kaptan Bazaar (Beside Gumti River), Bibir Bazaar, Khela Bazaar, EPZ Gate Ishaq Market, Ramchandrapur, Dulalpur, Chauddagram, Monipur, Chandimura, Madhavpur, Mohanpur, Rasulpur, Syedpur, Madhaya, Eliotganj, Baroikandi, Changini Bazaar, Daulatganj, Nangalkot, Nimshar, Betakhali Mela, Thanda Kalibari Mela, Laksam Bazaar etc.

The Comilla Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education is located in Comilla. This is the central administration that conducts primary, secondary, and higher secondary education for several districts. There are huge educational facilities in Comilla. Comilla Govt. College, Comilla Cantonment High School, Comilla University, The University Of Comilla (UNIC),  Comilla Medical College, Chandina Redwan Ahmed Degree College, Comilla Teachers Training College, Comilla Cadet College, Comilla Polytechnic Institute, Comilla Victoria Govt. College, Comilla Zilla School, Comilla Iswar Pathsala, Nimshar Junab Ali College, Ispahani Public School and College Comilla, Nawab Faizunnesa Girls High School, Our Lady of Fatima Girls High School, Comilla High School, Rose Garden International School, Shailarani Devi Girls High School, School of Military Intelligence at Comilla Cantonment, Bangladesh Academy for Rural Development (BARD), Comilla Modern High School, Montoly High School, Ghorashal Abdul Karim High School, Ibne Taimiya School & College, Debidwar al-haj jobeda khatun mohila college, Khalil Pur High School, Chandpur Model Technical High School, Gunabati Gov.High School, Companigonj Badiul Alam Degree College, Matha Bhanga Bhairob High School, Beltoli High School etc. are the most popular educational institutions of Comilla.

Comilla has a number of tourist attractions. Various archaeological relics discovered in the district are now preserved in the Mainamati Museum, Mainamati being a famous Buddhist archaeological site. There is a World War II war cemetery in Comilla, which is protected and maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. Marks of rich ancient civilization have been found in Lalmai Mainamati hills. Kazi Nazrul Islam (the national poet of Bangladesh), passed significant time of his life in this city. Both his wives, Promila Devi and Nargis, hailed from this district.
