Chittagong

Chittagong is the second largest city and one of the historical district and division of Bangladesh. It has a population of over 3.5 million and located between the Chittagong Hill Tracts and the Bay of Bengal. Chittagong is a major commercial and industrial area of Bangladesh’s import and export. For this reason it is called the main port of Bangladesh. The port has huge modern facilities, which helps further development of the nation and Bangladesh prepares to serve as a transit country between Southwest China, Nepal, Bhutan, North East India and parts of
Burma. A report published by International Institute for Environment and Development that, Chittagong is among the ten fastest growing cities in the world.

In the 16th and 17th centuries the city was a Portuguese colony. Before falling under Mughal rule in 1966, it was a part of the Arakan Kingdom. Surya Sen (Bengali revolutionary’s leader) launched the Chittagong uprising in 1930 against the British Raj, which British armories, telegraph and telephone offices in the city were attacked and hundreds of Europeans were assassinated in the Chittagong Club. In the Second World War, Chittagong’s port served as a major supply line for Allied Force while its airport was a major station for US Air Force combat aircraft.

                         When India was partitioned in 1947, then the city became a part of East Pakistan (present Bangladesh). During the liberation war of Bangladesh, Chittagong witnessed some of the heaviest fighting with the Bangladeshi freedom fighters attacking Pakistani navy ships and India navy firing missiles at Pakistani naval installations. It was in Chittagong where Bangladeshi president Zia-ur-Rahman historically announced the declaration of Independence of the country on behalf of independence leader Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Chittagong was also where the assassination of President Zia-ur -Rahman had taken place during a failed mutiny in 1981.

                           Chittagong has a tropical monsoon climate and a total area of 157 square kilometers. It is located on the banks of the Karnaphuli River. The city is popular for its vast hilly terrain. Chittagong has a population of 3.5 million, male 55% and female 45%. Population density per square km is 15276. Islam is the main religion of the people. Muslim 84%, Hinduism and other 16%. Chittagong is divided into many mahallas and several wards, but under the Chittagong City Corporation. Chittagong City Corporation is governed by an elected representative (city mayor) for 5 years. Chittagong is the home district of Dr. Mohammad Yunus, founder of Grameen Bank, who won Nobel Prize in Peace in 2006.

Most of the new and old buildings of the Chittagong city are built on hillocks and top of low hills and also along the plains and valleys. There are two most familiar Dargah in Chittagong. One of the Dargah Sharif of Bayazid Bostami (born in Bostam, Iran) and other is the Dargah Sharif of Hazrat Shah Sufi Amanat Khan. There are also some attractive mosques in the Chittagong, such as- Shahi Jame Mosque, Qadam Mubarak Mosque, Andar killa Jame Mosque, Jamia Tul Falah Mosque etc. There is also a historic for generally known as Andar Killa. The Chittagong Circuit house was built by the British in 1913. Now it used for temporary residential accommodation for visiting Government high officials.Chittagong also has a stock exchange. The name of this stock exchange is Chittagong Stock Exchange. This is the second stock exchange of Bangladesh.

                    The city of Chittagong is one of the major tourist attractions in Bangladesh. Forests, sandy beaches, green hills and fine cool climate always attract the tourists. There are many tourist spots in Chittagong, but some major tourist spots are- Chittagong Hill Tracts, Patenga Beach, Foy's Lake, Heritage Park, Chittagong Ethnological Museum, Zia Memorial Museum and World War 2 cemetery Museum.

       There are also huge educational facilities into Chittagong. Chittagong Medical College, Chittagong University and Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology are run by the government. But Chittagong University (established in 1966) is one of the largest universities in Bangladesh. Currently number of student is more than 15,500. There are also some private universities in Chittagong like University of Science and Technology-USTC (1992), East Delta University-EDU, International Islamic University Chittagong-IIUC (1995), Southern University Bangladesh-SUB (1998), BGC Trust University (2002), Premier University-PU (run by Chittagong City Corporation), University of Information Technology & Sciences (UITS), Asian University for Women (2008) and Independent University Bangladesh (IUB). Chittagong has also some private medical colleges, such as: Chittagong International Dental College, Chittagong Ma O Shishu Medical College, BGC Trust Medical College, Southern Medical College etc.

        Government Commerce College (1948), Chittagong Government Girls' College (1957), Chittagong College (1869), Government City College (1954), Hazi Muhammad Mohsin College (1979), Enayet Bazar woman College (1970), Fauzdarhat Cadet College (1958), Agrabad woman college, Chittagong Cantonment Public College, Ispahani Public College etc are the main colleges of Chittagong city. The main schools are Chittagong Collegiate School (1836), Dr. Khastagir Government Girls' High School (1878), Municipal Model High School (1880), Kazem Ali High School (1885), Chittagong Government High School (1906), Government Muslim High School (1909), Aparnacharan City Corporation Girls' High School (1927), Hathey Khari School (1976), Chittagong Grammar School, Radiant School, Mastermind School, William carey school, Cider International School, Sunshine Grammar School etc. Chittagong has also available Islamic institution like Jamiya Ahmadia Sunnia Alia Madrasa, Baitush Sharaf Ideal Kamil Madrasa, Nesaria Alia Madrasa and Darul Ulum alia Madrasa.

     Transport system in Chittagong is similar to Dhaka (Capital of Bangladesh). Shah Amanat International Airport is the second busiest airport in Bangladesh. Chittagong is home district of many cricketers, footballers and athletes. Cricket, football, kabadi, tennis is the most popular games in the Chittagong. The MA Aziz Stadium is the main stadium in Chittagong and it is one of the famous cricket grounds in Bangladesh because in 2005 Bangladesh achieved its first test victory against Zimbabwe. Zohur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium is another main stadium in Chittagong, which was awarded the test status in 2006. Mohamedan Sporting Club and Abahani Sporting Club is the main sporting club in Chittagong. 2011 ICC World Cup's 2 matches will be held on the Chittagong.

Due to many reason Chittagong is an excellent city of Bangladesh and also South Asia.
