Sukumar Ray is Bengali humorous poet of west Bengal and Bangladesh. He was not only a poet but also a famous children’s writer. He is special famous in this region because more than 80 years after his death, he remains one of the most popular of children's writers. He is generally known of the writer of “Abol Tabol”. Abol Tabol is considered nonsense masterpieces equal in stature to Alice in Wonderland. This famous work was published just 9 days before his death. As perhaps the most famous Indian practitioner of literary nonsense, he is often
compared to Lewis Carroll. He helped to improve Bengali literature.
Sukumar Ray born was on 30th October 1887 in a Brahmo family in Calcutta, India. His father’s name was Upendrakishore Ray and his mother was Bidhumukhi. Upendrakishore Ray (also known as Ray Chowdhury) was a famous children's story writer. He was also a close friend of Rabindranath Tagore, who directly influenced Sukumar Ray. Sukumar Ray was the second child in his family. He was also the father of great Indian filmmaker Satyajit Ray and grandfather of legendary Bengali filmmaker Sandip Ray. In 1906, Graduates with Hons. in Physics and Chemistry from the Presidency College of Kolkata. In 1911, Sukumar Ray also visits Santiniketan on Rabindranath Tagore's fiftieth birthday.
In 1895, his first poem "Nodi" was published in the magazine "Mukul." His notable works are Abol tabol (Gibberish), HaJaBaRaLa (Mumbo-Jumbo), Pagla Dashu (Crazy Dashu), Bohurupee, Heshoram Hushiyarer Diary (The diary of Heshoram Hushiyar), Chalachittachanchari, Khai-Khai (Eat-Eat), Jhalapala O Onanyo Natok (Cacophony and Other Plays), Shabdakalpadrum, Lakkhaner Shoktishel (The Weapon of Lakkhan) etc.
Sukumar Ray died at age of 36 on 10th September 1923 due to infectious fever, leishmaniasis. In that time, there was no cure about this. He left behind his widow and their only child, famous Satyajit Ray. Satyajit Ray was the most well known Indian filmmakers. He shoots a documentary about Sukumar Ray before 5 years his own death in 1987.
