Jessore

Jessore is a district of Bangladesh and it is located in the Khulna division of southwestern Bangladesh. Jessore consists of eight upazillas, namely Abhaynagar, Bagherpara, Chowgacha, Jessore-Sadar, Jhikargacha, Keshobpur, Monirampur, and Sharsha. Jessore city stands on the Bhairab and it consists of 9 wards and 74 mahalls. Jessore district is bordered by in India to the west. Jessore municipality was established in 1864. This district produces a lot of crops in the whole country. There are also many such trees in the Keshobpur and
Monirampur areas. Jessore became the first district of Bangladesh to be liberated from Pakistani forces on 7 December, 1971.

In the ancient Janapad kingdom Jessore district was a part of Samatat Janapad. Jessore was partially divided in 1947, at the time of the partition of India. Except for the Bangaon and Gaighata thanas, the entire district became part of East Pakistan (present Bangladesh). On March 29, 1971, the Bengali soldiers (Mukti Bahini) stationed at Jessore cantonment mutinied against the Pakistan Army. They were led by Captain Hafiz Uddin and Lieutenant Anwar in an uprising in which about 300 soldiers were killed. The rebels killed 50 Pakistani soldiers with machine gun fire at Chanchara.

Jessore has a total area of 2648.15 square kilometers. It is bordered by Khulna and Satkhira districts on the south, Jhenaidaha and Magura districts on the north, West Bengal of India on the west and Khulna and Narail districts on the east. Major rivers that flow through this region are the Bhairab and Kapotakhho. In Jessore, annual average temperature range from 10 to 42°C. And the annual rainfall is 1537 mm. It has a total population of 2,459,136 where, male 52.01% and female 47.99% (Muslims 86%, Hindus 13% and other religion 01%). Here the average literacy rate is 54.8%. In this region the main occupations of the people are agriculture 40%, agricultural laborer 26%, wage laborer 3%, commerce 13%, service 9%, industry 2%, transport 3% and others 4%. Some people are working as foreign workers in the Middle East countries. Paddy, jute, sugarcane, tuberose, vegetables are the main crops in this region and main fruits are Mango, jackfruits, papaya, banana, litchi and coconut. Main exports are cotton, jute, leather, jackfruit, banana, comb and date molasses, and vegetables. Jessore is also the place for growing various types of flowers.
Jessore has a very good transport system with links to all the districts of Bangladesh. The main transport system in the city is train, buses, mini buses, cars and rickshaws. Jessore is well connected by highways and railways links to Northern Bangladesh and capital city Dhaka, as well as other parts of Khulna and the whole country. It has highways for transportation to both Bangladesh and India. The network has links extended into Indian Territory. Service linking the capital Dhaka and the Indian city Kolkata is to start April 2008, with Jessore falling about halfway down the route. At presently 2011, Jessore Airport is the main airport of the division. It has domestic flights to the rest of Bangladesh. It is located near the Jessore city and it is also an airbase for the Bangladesh Air Force.

Economical environment in the Jessore is normal. Its economic is based on farming. It is also a producing area of jute, pulses and many crops. But now a day, many people are interested about fishing and they earn their livelihood by fishing. Several people are also working as foreign workers in the Middle East countries. Tourism is one of the key of the Jessore economy.

Jessore has a huge educational facility. The education system of Jessore is under the Jessore Education Board. Jessore has many notable and famous educational institutions include Jessore Science and Technology University, Jessore Polytechnic Institute, Jessore Cantonment College, Jessore Rifles School, Jessore Zilla School, BAF Shaheen College, Michael Modhushudon College, Government Girls' High School, Jessore, Dawood Public School, Police Line School, Matikumra High School, Backra High School, Backra Degree College, Akij Collegiate School, Sacred Heart School, Talbaria Degree College, Hashim pur High School, Navarn Degree College, DR. Abdur Razzak Municipal college, Jhikargacha Pilot High School, Jhikargacha Degree College and Jhikargacha B.M High School.

Jessore has also some tourist attraction for its beauty. Kapatakkha River is very famous river in this area. Village Rampur has become a tourist attraction for its island-like look surrounded by two rivers (Jhapa Bayor and Khajura Bayor). Sagardari is also the birthplace of the poet Michael Madhusudan Dutta. His large house consists of a huge garden, a small museum and houses. At present, it is generally known as a museum. The front gate of the house has a solid sculpture work. The Kapatakka River is only a block away from his house. The Jessore Collect ret Building (located in Daratana), is another tourist attraction because it is one of the oldest buildings in Jessore. There is a small village called Dhulgram at Abhaynagar Upazila. There was once a magnificent complex of 17 temples here, but now only one remains standing. Most of the temples were submerged into the Bhairab River, which flows by the complex. A beautiful terracotta design can be seen all over the temple. It is considered a very holy place by Bengals.

There is a historical building named Imam Bara, situated at Murolir Mor beside the Dhaka-Khulna Highway. It was built by Hazi Muhammad Mohsin. Near the town of Jessore, there is a suburb called Chanchra. A Chanchra Rajbari once stood but it is completely ruined now. However, one can see the Shiv Temple, which is almost restored; the ruined Dosh Mahabidya Temple, which is only piece in Bangladesh, and Jora Shiv Temple at Murali in almost ruined condition. In Bhatnagar, stand the ruins of an 11 temple complex dedicated to Lord Shiva. Though the central temple is partially destroyed the place still shows the majesty of the glorious past of Bengal.

Jessore is also the birthplace of the great poet of and dramatist Michael Madhusudan Dutta, the great philanthropist and educationist Mahendra Lal Bose, the great actor Dhiraj Bhattacharya and the Indian novelist Manishankar Mukherjee Shankar.
