ICC Cricket World Cup 2011

The ICC World Cup 2011 will be the tenth Cricket World Cup in the history and will be hosted by three South Asian Test cricket playing countries: Bangladesh, India and Sri Lanka. This will be Bangladesh's first time co-hosting a Cricket World Cup. The World Cup was also supposed to be co-hosted by Pakistan, but unfortunately attack on the Sri Lankan national cricket team (2009) in Pakistan’s Lahore, the International Cricket Council (ICC) decided to strip Pakistan of its hosting rights. The headquarters of the organizing committee
were originally situated in Lahore, but after the attack on the Sri Lankan national cricket team (2009), the organizing committee has now been shifted to Mumbai. Pakistan was supposed to hold 14 matches, including one semi-final. Eight of Pakistan's matches have been transferred to India, four to Sri Lanka and two to Bangladesh.

Fourteen national cricket teams are ready for the world cup. The first match of the world cup would take place on 19th February, 2011 at Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur, Dhaka and the final match of the world cup would take place on 2nd April, 2011 at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai. But the opening ceremony will be held two days before the start of the tournament on 17th February 2011 at Bangabandhu National Stadium in Dhaka, Bangladesh.

The tournament is administrated by International Cricket Council (ICC). The world cup will use cricket’s one day international format. The first round of the tournament will be a round-robin in which the 14 teams are divided into 2 groups of 7 teams each. The 7 teams play each other once but the top 4 from each group qualifying for the quarter-finals. The format ensures that each team gets to play a minimum of 6 matches even if they are ruled out of the tournament due to early defeats. The official event ambassador for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 is Sachin Tendulkar. In his role as ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 ambassador he will be called upon to promote and support a variety of ICC initiatives for the tournament, which is the third biggest sporting event in the world and will take place in Bangladesh, India and Sri Lanka from 19 February to 2 April 2011.

The official song of the 2010 World Cup is "De Ghuma Ke". It is composed by the trio of Shankar–Ehsaan–Loy, and is sung in Hindi, Bangla and Sinhalese. It has been sung by Shankar Mahadevan and Divya Kumar and has been marketed by Ogilvy and Mather. It incorporates an array of Indian rhythms, as well as elements of rock and hip-hop. The song will be performed in the opening ceremony of the tournament to be held in Bangladesh on February 17, 2011.

The official mascot of the 2010 World Cup is “Stumpy”. He was unveiled at a function in Colombo, Sri Lanka, on Friday, 2 April 2010. Stumpy is a ten years old elephant that is very young, enthusiastic and is determined. Cricket-followers based all over the world were able to participate in a contest to name the mascot. The official name of the mascot (Stumpy) was released on Monday, 2 August 2010 after an online competition conducted by the International Cricket Council in the last week of July, 2010. It was unveiled by Sachin Tendulkar, Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Kumar Sangakara with 200 days to go for the world cup.

The ICC Cricket World Cup trophy is an excellent trophy and it is a running trophy, presented to the winning team since 1999. This excellent trophy was designed by Garrard and Co and they designed it within two months. The original trophy is kept with the ICC at headquarters in Dubai. The winning team is given a replica. The only difference between the two is that the original has the names of all the previous winners inscribed on it. The 2011 Cricket World Cup champion team would be taking home prize money of 3 million US dollars and 1.5 million US dollars for runner-up, with the ICC (International Cricket Council) deciding to double the total allocation for the coveted tournament to 10 million US dollars. The decision was taken at the ICC Board meeting which was held in Dubai on April 20, 2010.

All the Indian stadiums for the 2011 World Cup had been finalized earlier, and the venues of Bangladesh and Sri Lanka were finalized in late October 2009. All the venues of the 2011 Cricket World Cup were announced on 2 November 2009 in Mumbai by the ICC (International Cricket Council). Two new stadiums in Sri Lanka are being constructed exclusively for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011. They are located in Kandy and Hambantota. So, the final venues are Sher-e-Bangla Cricket Stadium- Bangladesh (Capacity 35,000), Chittagong Divisional Stadium- Bangladesh (Capacity 20,000), Kolkata Eden Gardens- India (Capacity 82,000), Feroz Shah Kotla- India (Capacity 48,000), Sardar Patel Stadium- India (Capacity 50,000), M. A. Chidambaram Stadium- India (Capacity 46,000), Wankhede Stadium- India (Capacity 45,000), Punjab Cricket Association Stadium- India (Capacity 35,000), Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium- India (Capacity 45,000), M. Chinnaswamy Stadium- India (Capacity 42,000), R. Premadasa Stadium- Sri Lanka (Capacity 35,000), Muttiah Muralitharan International Cricket Stadium- Sri Lanka (Capacity 35,000) and Mahinda Rajapaksa International Stadium- Sri Lanka (Capacity 37,000). But the venue for the opening ceremony is Bangabandhu National Stadium in Dhaka, Bangladesh and the venue for the final ceremony is Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, India.

The fourteen ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 teams are Bangladesh, India, Sri Lanka, Australia, England, South Africa, West Indies, Pakistan, New Zealand, Zimbabwe, Kenya, Canada, Ireland and Netherlands. The Umpire selection panel selected 18 umpires excluding a reserve umpire, Enamul Haque (Bangladesh) to officiate at the World Cup: 5 from Australia (Simon Taufel, Steve Davis, Rod Tucker, Daryl Harper, Bruce Oxenford), 2 from India (Shavir Tarapore, Amish Saheba), 2 from Pakistan (Aleem Dar, Asad Rauf) 3 from England(Ian Gould, Richard Kettleborough, Nigel Llong), 2 from New Zealand (Billy Bowden, Tony Hill) and 1 each from South Africa (Marais Erasmus) and West Indies (Billy Doctrove). So, 2011 ICC World Cup is very welcome for all.
